A successful studio portrait begins before the camera comes out. A little preparation helps you arrive with a clear idea, clothing that photographs well and the items you need for the kind of images you want.
Decide what the photographs are for
Start with the purpose of the session. You may want a personal portrait, birthday photographs, professional images, couple portraits or updated family pictures. Save a few references that show the mood, colours or poses you like. References are useful for explaining your direction, but your final photographs should still feel personal to you.
Tell the studio who will be photographed and where you expect to use the images. A portrait intended for a framed wall display may need a different composition from one created for a profile picture or social-media campaign.
Choose outfits that support the idea
Bring clothing that fits comfortably and makes you feel confident. Solid colours and coordinated tones are often easier to photograph than very busy patterns or large logos. That is a helpful starting point, not a strict rule; a bold pattern can work when it is part of the concept.
Check each outfit before the session. Remove visible labels, iron or steam creases and bring the correct shoes and accessories. If several people will be photographed together, coordinate colours without making everyone wear exactly the same thing.
